Sensex and Nifty closed in the red as the Indian equity market ended its 3-day winning run amid profit booking. At close, Sensex was down 168.66 points at 71315 level while Nifty shed 38 points and closed the session at 21418 mark.
Around 1886 shares advanced and 1478 shares declined while 124 stocks remained unchanged.
Among the sectors, pharma added 1 percent while capital goods index added 0.7 percent. On the other hand, the realty sector shed 1 percent. Bank Nifty slipped 0.5 percent.
The top gainers from the pharma space included Zydus Life Sciences which surged over 5 percent followed by Granules India, Laurus Labs and Torrent Pharma.

Realty stocks were under pressure. The top losers were Swan Energy, Godrej Properties, Oberoi Realty and DLF among others.

Asian markets ended lower on December 18 with Nikkei down 0.65 percent to close at 32,758 mark while Hang Seng slipped close to a percent at 16,629 level. However, Kospi managed to close in the green, up 0.13 percent at the 2,566 mark.
European Markets were trading mixed on December 18. At 4:02 PM, IST, FTSE added 0.39 percent at 7,606 level while CAC shed 0.3 percent at 7,574 mark. German DAX slipped 0.21 percent and was trading at 16,716 level.
