Stock Market at Close: Sensex, Nifty Snap 5-Day Winning Streak; IT, Pharma Top Drags

The Indian stock market ended the session on January 16, 2024, in the red amid volatility. At close, Sensex shed 199 points at 73,128 while Nifty was down 65 points and closed at the 22,032 mark. This came amid profit booking in the stock market.

Among the sectors, metal and oil & gas indices gained almost 1 percent. On the other hand, power, realty, healthcare, and Information Technology sectors shed 0.5-1.5 percent.

Around 837 stocks advanced and 1703 declined while 87 remained unchanged.

Asian markets end in the red

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index shed 2.06 percent, while mainland China’s CSI 300 index reversed losses to gain 0.61 percent to 3,300.87 as Asian markets closed in the red. The Nikkei 225 slipped 0.79 percent to close at 35,619.18. The broad-based Topix fell 0.82 percent to 2,503.98.

European markets trade lower

European stocks saw a negative start on January 16, as markets continued to focus on news and comments from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The regional Stoxx 600 index shed 0.57 percent. FTSE declined 0.55 percent at 7,553 while CAC slipped 0.5 percent at 7,374. German DAX was down 0.61 percent at 16,520 level.
