The Indian stock market ended in the red following weak global cues. At close, Sensex declined 670 points or 0.93 percent at the 71355 mark while Nifty fell 197 points or 0.91 percent at the 21513 level.
Around 1014 stocks advanced and 1574 declined while 96 remained unchanged.
Among the sectors, FMCG, Pharma, and Metal indices were down 1 percent each, while Power and Realty indices added 0.6 percent each in a weak stock market. The BSE Midcap index shed 0.7 percent and smallcap index slipped 0.2 percent.

Asian markets end on a weak note
Asian markets ended in the red on January 8, 2024. The Hang Seng index dived 2 percent at the 16,224.45 mark. Kospi slipped 0.4 percent at 2,567.82 level. Japan’s Nikkei was shut down on account of a holiday.
European markets slide
European shares edged lower on Monday, extending their lackluster start to the year as tepid energy shares dragged the index, while a rise in government bond yields weighed on risk sentiment.
The Stoxx 600 was down 0.6 percent with all sectors trading in negative territory. FTSE shed 0.35 percent at the 7,662 mark while CAC slipped 0.24 percent at the 7,403 level. German DAX fell 0.08 percent at 16,580.
